Albert Sallitt, 91, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away
Saturday, May 27, 2023, at the Allied Services Hospice Center in
Wilkes-Barre.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Samuel C. and
Betty Johns Sallitt. Al served in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1951-
52, during the Korean War, rising to the rank of sergeant.
Al was a graduate of Meyers High School (1949), Kings College
(1956, B.A in English), and Lehigh University (Masters in
Counseling and Secondary School Education). He was a guidance
counselor at G.A.R from 1957, and then an assistant principal at
G.A.R from 1971, and at Coughlin from 1973. Al was also a head
wrestling coach and an assistant football coach at G.A.R.,
leading the wrestling team to its first Wyoming Valley
Conference title and its first individual Pennsylvania state
wrestling championship. After his retirement from coaching, he
was a wrestling referee in the Wyoming Valley Conference and the
NCAA, officiating at three Pennsylvania state championship
finals.
Al was a member of St. Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox Church in
Wilkes-Barre. In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in
death by his sister Shirley Mae and his brother Robert.
Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Betty May Joseph Sallitt,
born in Allentown, Pa.; his children Daniel, Samuel, and Steven
Sallitt; his grandchildren Lauren Sallitt King, Christopher
Sallitt and Dustin Sallitt; and his great-grandchildren Conor
King and Gwenyth Sallitt.
Funeral services will be held privately in accordance with his
wishes, with arrangements by Mamary-Durkin Funeral Services.
