Dr. Norman D. Namey, formerly of Kingston, Pompano Beach Florida and most recently Dallas passed away peacefully on December 5, 2024 at Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Dallas.
Norman was born in Wilkes-Barre on February 4, 1933. He graduated from Meyers High School and then continued on to earn his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Bloomsburg University. With the loving support of his family, he subsequently earned and was awarded his Doctorate in education from Lehigh University.
He was a life-long educator and began his teaching career at the Miami Military Academy in Miami in the early 1960’s and began a three decade career at the Wyoming Valley West School District as a kindergarten teacher and retired in 1996 as the School District Superintendent (holding various positions in the intervening years). He taught undergraduate and graduate classes at local colleges and universities and served on numerous state-wide committees of the Department of Education.
Norman was a member of St. Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox Church, Wilkes-Barre. He served the Parish on its Council where he also was the Chairperson. He was also a member of, and served the Parish, of St. Philips Antiochian Orthodox Church in South Florida where he and his beloved wife Phyllis resided after retiring.
Left behind to treasure his memory are his son Norman D. Namey and his wife Kate, of Dallas, daughter Lisa Cunningham and her husband Rick, and granddaughter Sydney whom he cherished, of Fort Lauderdale and many nieces and nephews.
Norman is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis who was his forever partner in all life’s adventures. He is also preceded in death by his parents Albert and Zanie (Mamary) Namey and all of his eleven siblings: brothers Leo, John, Joe, George, and Michaelsi and sisters Fannie Namey, Mary Reh, Bessie Jacobs, Ruth Solomon, Irene Tenneriello, and Helen Koscak, and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call Wednesday, December 11 from 4 to 6p.m. at Mamary-Durkin Funeral & Cremation Services, 59 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre, PA. Funeral services will be held at 10am on Thursday, December 12 in St. Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox Church, 905 South Main St, Wilkes-Barre, PA. Interment will follow in the Parish Cemetery.
