After a courageous battle with cancer, June Compton, 90 of Hanover Twp., passed away on
Tuesday, February 27 at home surrounded by her loving family.
June was the daughter of the late Leo and Sarah Carkhuff Gilroy and a member at St. Aloysius
Church, Hanover Twp. She graduated from Hanover Twp. High School in 1952 and then
completed real estate school.
June served as a waitress for several local establishments, but she was best known for her
years working at Tony Perugino’s restaurant.
In her early days, June was a Powder Puff Stock Car driver. She loved to golf and was a
member of the Four Seasons Ladies’ Golf League and the Wilkes-Barre Ladies’ Golf League
where she had a hole-in-one on 17 over water in league play.
June is survived by her daughter JoAnne Schoenknecht and husband Richard, son Richard
Compton and wife Ginny, daughter Patricia James, grandchildren Michelle Hattabaugh, David
Compton, Jamie Lee Compton, and Sarah James, and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son Robert, sister Marie Beganics, and brother Leo Gilroy,
Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Monday, March 11 in St. Robert Bellarmine
Parish/St. Aloysius Church, Hanover Twp. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church on
Monday. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
Memorial visitation will be on March 10 from 4-6pm at Mamary-Durkin Funeral & Cremation
Services, 59 Parrish St. Wilkes-Barre.
