Robert William Ashton, 79 of Lyndwood, Hanover Twp. passed away July 19 at home.
Bob was the son of the late William and Mildred Teske Ashton. He was a 1965 graduate of Hanover High School where he excelled as a baseball and basketball player. He received his BS and MS degrees from Wilkes College.
Bob was a dedicated science teacher at Hanover Area High School and also served as Student Council Advisor for many years. He was a Junior Varsity Basketball Coach and Varsity Baseball Coach and was honored as Coach of the Year in baseball by the Sunday Independent.
He had been an active member of the Wyoming Valley Presbyterian Church where he had a leadership role in many committees and served as church Elder. He loved music, especially church hymns, and he sang in the church choir.
Bob was an avid golfer and actually made a hole-in-one. He helped family members develop a love of the game.
Bob is survived by his wife Mary Ann Siedlecki Ashton, with whom he celebrated 54 years of marriage, children Michael Ashton, MD (Christine) of Sugarloaf, Joseph Ashton (Maryalice) of Seaside Park, NJ, Susan Werner, MD (Joseph) of Wilkes-Barre, and Ann Marie Malloy (Daniel) of Hanover Twp., 10 grandchildren- John, Madeline, and Andrew Ashton, Sugarloaf, Gabrielle and William Ashton, Seaside Park, Nicholas and Emily Werner, Wilkes-Barre, and Anna, Ailyn, and Elizabeth Malloy, Hanover Twp., sister Nancy Ashton West (Barry), Shavertown, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, in-laws, and friends.
The funeral service will be held at 11am on Friday, July 24, 2026 at Mamary-Durkin Funeral & Cremation Services, 59 Parrish Street Wilkes-Barre. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Twp. Friends and family may call at the funeral home on Thursday, July 23 from 5-7pm and on Friday from 10-11am.
Memorial donations, if desired, may be made in Bob’s name to Wyoming Valley Presbyterian Church, 2 Lockhart St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
